Arthritis: a term for many disorders

Over 4 million Canadians have some form of arthritis. In fact, it’s one of the leading causes of long-term disability in Canada today. Appropriate treatment, as well as learning how to manage this chronic condition, can go a long way to help. Find out about the differences between the most common forms of arthritis and what you can do to help manage the symptoms.

Ask Your Pharmacist

Question:  What is arthritis?

Answer: Arthritis is inflammation of the joints that affects almost one in six Canadians 15 years of age or older. It can affect people regardless of age, physical condition, or ethnicity, but it affects women more than men. Although there’s no cure for arthritis, proper treatment and self-management can help decrease its impact on your daily life and reduce joint damage. It is never too late to make lifestyle changes to improve your joint health.

Health Tip

Rheumatoid arthritis may cause pain when you move, but the way to help it could be to move more. Exercise can help strengthen the muscles around the joint, improve balance, and reduce your risk of falls. It can also help you lose weight, which will reduce the pressure on your joints. Did you know that losing 10 pounds of weight can decrease stress on your knees by 40 pounds?
